We’ve all seen the social media posts challenging us to be brave and share a message in support of one cause or another. You know, the sort of thing we don’t regularly talk about publically, mostly because it’s difficult to discuss or affects us on some deeper level. And really, we turn to social media to relieve our minds of the day-to-day worries and realities, but today I’m going to be that friend. The one who says ‘Have the courage to post this to your social media feed.’ Today I am asking you to change the conversation.
As you know we’ve spent a lot of time this past few weeks talking about road safety and specifically young drivers. With graduation season in full swing, it is prime time for teens to celebrate their achievements and their next steps into the great big world of adulthood. This is also just the right time for each and every one of us to get involved and lead the way for these bright minds. Whether you are a parent or not, you are a vital part of our vibrant community and as such hold the responsibility to lead by example.
Share the #DriveToThrive message
If you’ve missed recent posts, the #DriveToThrive initiative is a conversation starter about the perils of driving under the influence. By the time many teens have reached graduation, they have used drugs or alcohol, or at the very least have been in the company of teens who do. Now is the time to starting talking about the life altering implications one poor decision can have.
36.6% of teen drivers killed in road crashes had been drinking.
39.2% of teen drivers killed in road crashes tested positive for drugs.
These statistics are staggering! And they are not accidents, they are collisions and they are preventable.
Encourage your young driver, their schools and the community at large to participate in this fundamental initiative. Challenge teens to take the #DriveToThrive pledge and pressure their peers for the benefit of all to do the same. Even if the young adult in your life has already celebrated their graduation, it’s not too late to participate. This lesson is one to carry for a lifetime – be the life AFTER the party.
Taking the pledge is easy and on-line, and even better; there are prizes to be won just for making the smart choice. Visit DriveToThrive.ca for more information, to take the pledge and find useful resources about talking to your young driver.
