Thinking about moving?
While we hustle to pack up and make our new space feel like home, it seemed like a good time to give you a few pointers on making your own move.
-
Doing it yourself?
If you are renting a truck and paying your closest pals in pizza to get it done, be sure to check with your insurance advisor before waiving the insurance coverage on the rental. Many auto policies do cover rentals, but you may have to ask for it and it may not cover larger vehicles like moving trucks, so it’s definitely worth the call.
If your policy does not have this coverage you may want to consider adding it. The cost is fairly minimal and will cover not only your move, but also any other car rentals you make during the policy term. One vacation getaway and this easily pays for itself.
-
Got liability?
Inviting friends to stumble up and down stairs, through tight hallways, and over curbs and sidewalks while carrying your heaviest furniture is a recipe for injury and disaster. Your home policy includes third party liability that covers you in case things don’t go as smoothly as you’d like. Be sure that you don’t cancel your policy too early and that you have coverage for move day, also check with your advisor to make sure you have enough coverage. The cost of increasing this limit is barely noticeable on your premium and worth every penny.
-
Hiring a professional?
Your home policy will cover your contents in the event of loss or damage, but you will have to pay the deductible and it’s likely your premium will go up. Know what that deductible is ahead of time and talk to your advisor about whether or not it’s worth investing in the extra insurance your mover offers.
Do your homework and find a reliable, reputable mover to handle the transport of your possessions. Need a little help? Check out the Consumer Checklist for Choosing a Mover, provided by the Government of Canada, a handy resource!
Be sure to update your contact list with our new information and stay in touch, we love hearing from you!
